ADVISORY: U.S. Cyber Command Luncheon and Hacking Competition Highlight Anne Arundel County’s Cyber Month

October 3, 2017

Annapolis, Maryland – (October 3, 2017) – Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation (AAEDC) today announced a series of events to highlight its technology industry and assets during October, National Cyber Security Awareness Month. As home to Fort George G. Meade and prominent federal organizations such as the National Security Agency and U.S. Cyber Command, Anne Arundel County is a hub for information and network security, big data intelligence, and analytics.

The county’s robust technology ecosystem includes more than 700 innovative companies and about 10,530 private sector tech/cyber jobs.  In July, Anne Arundel Economic Development launched the Arundel Defense Tech Toolbox.  The toolbox offers financing for mezzanine level companies, workforce development grants and vital mentoring opportunities from experts in commercial technology marketing, government contracting and patent law.

“We want to do everything we can do help these small businesses go further,” said AAEDC CEO Julie Mussog. “Our Cyber Month program highlights the resources and connections that we can offer our companies so they continue to grow and create jobs.”

Cyber Month activities include:

Tuesday, October 10

AAEDC is a bronze sponsor and exhibitor at this event hosted by the Cyber Association of Maryland, Inc. (CAMI).  The day features technology demos, product and service company exhibits, “Ask an Expert” Information Stations, and networking

The competition, hosted by Anne Arundel Workforce Development Corporation, LAUNCH Annapolis, and HackEd and sponsored by AAEDC. simulates a real life cyber range where users build their own servers and defend them while attacking other servers.  Past event attendees include up-and-coming programmers established or corporate sponsored hacking teams. The event also provides local technology companies a chance to connect with attendees about potential job opportunities.

Mon, October 23, 2017
9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Workshop: Learn about NIST SP 800-171 Compliance Requirements with G2, Inc., Anne Arundel Community College’s Center for Cyber and Professional Training (CCPT), Hanover
AAEDC, along with the Maryland Small Business Development Center and G2, Inc., an Annapolis Junction based cyber solutions and services organization, will host this information session targeted to federal government contractors working in the national defense space.  The event will highlight the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Publication 800-171 Protecting Covered Defense Information in Nonfederal Systems and Organizations, otherwise known as DFARS (Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement).  The regulation mandates that contractors be compliant with this set of requirements by the deadline of December 31, 2017 to ensure the security of Covered Defense Information (CDI).  Tom Conkle and Kelly Hood of G2, Inc., will review details of the regulation and the specific control families in 171 so attendees can better understand the necessary steps to compliance.

Also this month, AAEDC will offer a new video for county technology companies to use as part of their college fair presentations and out-of-state recruitment campaigns. The 90-second video “The New Tech Hub on the Bay” highlights the county’s quality of life, scenic communities, and major assets such as BWI-Marshall Airport, the U.S. Naval Academy and Fort Meade.  The goal of the spot is to attract technology professionals to the area and consider employment opportunities with local companies.

For more information on any of these events or if your company would like a copy of the video, please contact AAEDC’s Business Development Associate for technology Sarah Horta.  She can be reached by phone at (410)222-7410 or by email at [email protected] .
