According to the Maryland Geological Survey, Anne Arundel County has 508 miles of shoreline. It is not just a scenic asset but a significant economic driver as well.
Three main constituencies make up the maritime industry; private sector businesses that are dependent on our waterways; Visitors and recreational enthusiasts who enjoy boating, fishing and associated leisure activities; and public and nonprofit organizations that benefit from the Chesapeake Bay and its many branches.
Within and emanating from these constituencies are businesses and a workforce that offer products and services related to the water. All told, the maritime industry makes a $1.2 billion annual economic contribution to Anne Arundel County and supports 8,600 jobs. These insights are just a few of the many revelations in a new report by Sage Policy Group, “The Maritime Industry as a Driver of Economic Recovery & Middle-Class Formation in Anne Arundel County, MD.”
This report was recently published in consultation with the Anne Arundel Maritime Industry Advisory Board. The Board represents and promotes Anne Arundel County’s maritime industry and offers guidance and advises the County Executive and county officials in matters concerning the commercial and recreational maritime industries in Anne Arundel County.
