ADVISORY: Four Events Highlight Anne Arundel County’s Celebration of Maryland Economic Development Week

Annapolis, Maryland – (October 18, 2017) – Each year, Maryland Economic Development Week emphasizes how economic development contributes to the state’s business climate, job retention and growth, the tax base and the overall quality of life in Maryland. To highlight this special week, which runs from October 22 to 28, the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation (AAEDC) will be hosting and participating in three events to highlight various industry sectors and the efforts and resources that support them.

Monday, October 23, 2017, 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM
Workshop: Learn about NIST SP 800-171 Compliance Requirements with G2, Inc.
Anne Arundel Community College

AAEDC, along with the Maryland Small Business Development Center and G2, Inc., an Annapolis Junction based cyber solutions and services organization, will host this information session targeted to federal government contractors working in the national defense space. The event will highlight the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Publication 800-171 Protecting Covered Defense Information in Nonfederal Systems and Organizations, otherwise known as DFARS (Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement). The regulation mandates that contractors be compliant with this set of requirements by the deadline of December 31, 2017 to ensure the security of Covered Defense Information (CDI). Tom Conkle and Kelly Hood of G2, Inc., will review details of the regulation and the specific control families in 171 so attendees can better understand the necessary steps to compliance.

Tuesday, October 24, 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Agricultural Tour
Planned in conjunction with the Maryland Department of Agriculture, this tour will highlight farm-based businesses and educate local and state leaders on the importance of agriculture to Maryland’s economy. The tour will also demonstrate how farmers are diversifying their operations and provide better understanding of issues such as value-added agriculture, agri-tourism, best management practices and the importance of the equine industry. Stops include Hopewell Farm in Owings, Greenstreet Gardens in Lothian, En-Tice-Ment Meats in Harwood and Dodon Winery in Davidsonville.

Representatives from Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation will attend this event that helps connect professionals, business owners and entrepreneurs from around the county. AAEDC will announce an exciting new program sponsored by a well-known national brand that will help local companies enhance out-of-state business development opportunities.

This second of four classes will focus on the application process for Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) certification, how to conduct contracting opportunity searches and how to do business with Anne Arundel County and the City of Annapolis. The series is funded by AAEDC and planned in conjunction with such partners as the City of Annapolis, the Maryland Small Business Development Center and the Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
