County Executive Leopold Seeks Special BRAC Zone Designation for Odenton Town Center
Approval by State would make additional funding available

Annapolis (October 2, 2008)- - -  County Executive John R. Leopold announced today that he is seeking State approval of a special "BRAC Zone" designation for Odenton Town Center.

The designation would make Anne Arundel County government eligible for additional funding and other State resources to offset the cost of public infrastructure necessary to support development in Odenton Town Center.

"Development of the Odenton Town Center is critically needed to address the demands for housing, business services, office space and retail that will come with the expected growth at Fort Meade," said County Executive Leopold.  "The vision planned for development in Odenton has been to create a strong sense of place with a pedestrian-oriented community, close to public transportation, that offers a destination for shopping, employment, and entertainment.  A BRAC Zone designation will help support Anne Arundel County in making this vision a reality."

The BRAC Revitalization and Incentive Zone benefits are comprised of state rebates related to incremental tax revenue from the increased value of qualified properties in the BRAC Zone.  Rebated funds must be used for infrastructure improvements in the BRAC Zone.  The designation would also provide eligibility for Anne Arundel County to leverage other available state programs.

As part of the application process, Anne Arundel County conducted a public hearing on Wednesday, October 1, 2008 to brief the general public on the process and describe what it will mean to Odenton Town Center.

The BRAC Revitalization and Incentive Zone application must be submitted to the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development by October 15, 2008.  Written testimony from the public will be accepted until noon on October 6, 2008 and should be addressed to the Office of Planning and Zoning, Attention:  Sharon Faulkner, 2664 Riva Road, Annapolis, MD 21401.
